Author: Shri Rajah Iyer Suryanarain, Chennai
I have been taught by my father, late Sri M Rajah Iyer, Ex. M.LC., to believe in helping the poor and downtrodden particularly those in the teaching community. I lost my father in February 1974. Many poor people thronged to pay homage to him irrespective of their community in a small place, Ramnad. I decided to uphold his ideals. At that time two of my sisters were yet to be married. All my attempts find a match for my sister, Rajeswari, failed due to various reasons. Someone had expressed to me that the Kanchi Paramacharya is a living God and His blessings will certainly have a positive effect. Taking the words to be true, I went to Kanchi on Friday, the 4th July 1975 and we reached Kalavai at 5 p.m. in the evening. I was ignorant of the attire to be worn and sporting long sideburns, long hair, mustache and a trendy trousers reached the gates, near the Kalavai tank. A disciple specially asked that my wife and I go to the other side of the tank where Paramacharya might come to worship His Guru. I went there as directed and founded only on old sumangali lady with a very big tilak on her forehead.

I saw Periyaval coming with three of His disciples. He prayed for a few minutes in front of His Guru’s Samadhi. Then He looked at me. I got a feeling that can never be described with mere words. The next round He took He again looked at me. When He as just passing me, one of the disciples asked me who I was.

I had all my courage to say loudly, Periyaval, “ I am son of Sri M Rajah Iyer, Ramnad'

The great Sage did not come out for a few minutes. The old lady by my side felt very annoyed. She told me kindly “ My dear fellow! I have been having this unique darshan of Parameswara Himself on this sublime Friday. Why should you come in trousers and sideburns and spoil a darshan by shouting? Is this correct on your part to do so?” My wife also felt I shouldn’t have shouted. We tried to move from the place and were walking towards the front. A few minutes later I could see the ‘Perarul’ coming again and this time I remembered the lady’s words and took off my shirt and rushed to the wall. Then the inexplicable happened. Only the people who have witnessed would know.

Periyaval is total kindess asked me through gestures who I was. I said “Son of Rajah Iyer, Ramnad.” Periyaval was, I learnt, observing silence at that time. He started by mere signs, amply translated by His disciples, all about my father, now he received National Award from Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, his contributions in the Legislature, for about 45 minutes. There was big crowd watching this unique event. Unconscioulsy I was crying like a baby.

He very kindly asked me why I had come there. I told Him about my mission. With a smile Periyaval asked me “Is this the girl?” pointing to my sister. I said “Yes”. Periyaval asked me, moving His finger around His rudraksha, whether all ornaments were ready for the marriage. I said “ I need not spend a pie except to find a suitable groom”.

Then Periyaval with a radiant smile repeatedly blessed my sister. His compassion was all-pervasive. The time was 6.45 p.m. and it was pitch dark outside. I was about to leave. I didn’t know that we should get “permission from Periyaval” before leaving his presence.

Someone asked me to get “permission” and I did. He again asked me “How did you come from Madras?” I said “By car.” He asked his disciple whether it rained on that day, to which he said “No.” Then he thought for a second and again blessed me “Be careful on your way back.”

It rained heavily that night and was so heavy that we reached Kanchipuram, only at 11 p.m. We reached Madras in the early hours of 5th July. Next day, “The Hindu” published the news Kancheepuram experienced the heaviest rainfall of the last three decades on that day.

I got a call on the 8th July from Mr. S K Vaidyanathan whom my father had approached in 1973 with marriage proposal. He said he was now thinking getting married and would visit my house on 8th August. On that day, he stipulated only two conditions. First that I must take my sister to his parent’s house at Udumalpet for their concurrence and secondly if his parents were agreeable , we must have a simple wedding without any streedhanam. Needless to say that the wedding took place and my sister and her husband are happily settled in Bombay with two children.

On that day I decided that I know only one Deivam and till date Periyaval has blessed me in various ways. I still don’t know whether I deserve His grace but whenever I went to Kanchipuram, Periyaval blessed me and my family with affection.

Thanks to Periyaval’s constant blessing, I was able to get a lucrative foreign assignment in Nigeria in 1980. My family and I traveled all over the world every year. At last in ‘85 when the Nigerian economy was not in good shape, I asked my wife to arrange to leave and I followed her in ’86.

With Periyaval’s blessings, we bought a house in Adyar and named it “Sankaram”. But we didn’t have water. We had to buy a lorry load every day.

I joined my wife in Feb ’86 and according to the advice of some water diviners we put in a borewell. It was done sometime in May ‘ 86. After spending a lot of money still was no water. Another suggested a deep bore and jet pump. I did that too and it proved futile.

Totally vexed, my wife and I, on Saturday, the 24th May which incidentally happened to be Periyaval’s Jayathi day, got up at 4.30 a.m. had our bath and in all humility and devotion prayed to Periyaval. Then my wife switched on the jet pump. She could not believe her eyes as water started gushing out. It never stopped. All my neighbours, my mother-in-law and particularly the previous owner who sold his house to us only because of water problem, could not believe the miracle that happened.

We were enthralled that Periyaval’s blessings were visible in the house. The flow of water had never stopped since even during the worst days of water scarcity in Madras city. I just cannot understand that unique unadulterated bhakti, constant chanting of Periyaval’s Nama, has helped in getting past hurdles and crises.

My only prayer every day is that all the world must get His Anugraha in full, for several generations to come.

Thanks Periyava pro boards

Getting set for retirement

Planning ahead and getting set for retirement

M. S. Vaidyanathan
D-day for those in employment is normally their date of retirement. Given the present-day working environment with increasing workload and reduced manpower, it is not uncommon to see people just trying to figure out the period remaining for them to make a quiet but peaceful exit from service.
Many in their late fifties eagerly look forward to this and more often than not keep themselves engaged in related activities as a prelude to retirement. It could be working out the pension that they are likely to get with the current DA level, or the PF accumulated in their account, or other terminal benefits they are entitled to or even those benefits included in the updated version of the staff welfare schemes but not discussed regularly in friends’ circle.
Prospective retirees love to draw up their balance sheets keeping in mind their future commitments such as closure of home loans or education loans taken for their wards or other dues or even the outlay of funds required for the marriage of their children, and so on. Sometimes they carry a bewildered look when contingent liabilities flash through their minds or the sources of funds do not really match their expectations.
End of active service means freedom from the drudgery of daily routine which includes travelling sandwiched between sweating co-passengers in overcrowded trains and buses or being pulled up by the boss for coming late or for some frivolous reason. It is only in this scenario that many people long for the day when they can follow a schedule of their own, without being questioned by anyone. They mentally draw up a time-table of activities to be pursued — going for a walk or playing tennis in the mornings and visiting temples in the evenings, with the rest of the time for their own interests.
But it was this friend of mine who really did me in. Sitting with a blank paper before him, pen in hand, he broke into a smile when I looked at him inquiringly, having observed him sitting idle for more than a reasonable period of time. “I was just thinking of the other ‘retirement’, permanently from this world,” he quipped, and went on to add, “If I had to prepare my balance sheet of all the good I had done and all the sins I had committed and present it to Chitragupta, this is what it would probably look like. Blank!”

why aren’t you married?

That curious query, why aren’t you married?

Simran Brar
As a happily single woman of 33, I’ve often wondered about the ideal response to that annoying, yet inevitable, question that every unattached woman past a certain age has to deal with — “why aren’t you married?” Having spent the past several years in the U.S., away from the prying eyes and wagging tongues of overzealous family friends and relatives, I’ve been one of the lucky ones. Yet, when I moved back to India, it took only a few hours following touch-down in Delhi, for these seemingly idle folks to re-enter my life with a renewed zest, almost as if to make up for those years of freedom.
While life in the U.S. was enlightening in a variety of ways, within the context of this piece, I realised that even American women are no strangers to the pressures faced by their Indian sisters. That said, no-one, in my humble opinion, comes quite as close to us Indians, as far as intensely personal, brazenly probing and outrageously presumptuous questions about one’s personal life are concerned. And why are we so disturbingly good at this? As Malcolm Gladwell said, “ten thousand hours of practice.”
I can’t recall a more fitting anecdote to illustrate my point than the following. In 2007, I worked in an investment bank in New York for a little less than a year. I sat in the “curry corner”, the unofficial sobriquet for the section of the research floor that housed most of the Indian associates. I use the word “housed” by design, given that besides running to our apartments for a shower and a few hours of sleep, we practically lived here. It was here that I witnessed a conversation that to my mind is the archetypal example of the sort of unabashed enquiries Indians are notorious for.
A young, successful associate from the Indian subsidiary of our bank was in the New York office for the day. She walked over to say ‘hi’ to one of my colleagues, Payal (not her real name), who until a few years ago, worked with her in Mumbai. Nanoseconds after our guest said “hello”, she fired her first question: “Have you been promoted?” Payal, a talented professional herself, responded with a ‘no’ and began to explain the politics of promotion in our sprawling mid-town headquarters. With no interest in or patience for inter-office politics, our guest cut her off and fired the next salvo: “How much do you earn?” I shot a quick look at Payal, who seemed taken aback. Payal and I had worked alongside for months, and I daresay we had even become close. But never had the thought of putting her on the spot like this ever crossed my mind. In an organisation where associates could earn in a wide range based on performance, there were some unsaid rules that were meant never to be broken.
Payal took a few seconds to contemplate her response, and very diplomatically began to underscore the reality of the wide range of compensation packages in the bank. Our guest, even less impressed with this answer than the previous one, interjected again: “Do you have a baby?” “No,” said Payal, by now visibly annoyed by the third degree. “Why?” continued the woman, unperturbed by Payal’s rapidly changing face colour.
Really? Had she really just asked my friend why she didn’t have child yet? Every fibre of my being was aching to give Miss 101 questions a piece of my mind. But before I could think of anything scathing yet witty to say, Payal simply said: “It takes at least 10 minutes to make a baby, and my husband and I barely spend that much time together during the week.”
I burst out laughing despite myself. Payal was married to another high performer in the bank, who was even more sleep-deprived than we were on the research side.
Once our visitor left, I turned to Payal and asked her why she hadn’t shut this woman down. She just shrugged and said, “She’s just being desi .”
I guess she was right, even though I’ve never been that generous to anyone who’s stuck their nose into my business. You know those pesky relatives who’ll make it a point to walk up to you at every family wedding, and whisper gleefully in your ear, “you’re next.” I often fantasise about the day I get to meet them at a funeral and return the favour.
I know it’s awful and makes me a bad person, but we’re all allowed to dream … right? The closest I’ve even come to doing anything of the kind was a couple of years ago, when an especially meddlesome aunt cornered me at my brother’s wedding, and lamented in rather dramatic fashion that she would probably see the heavens before she saw me get married. I advised her to pick up yoga, since that was probably the only tool that would allow her to live long enough to see me take the plunge. My aunt was not happy, especially since I did a hilarious caricature of her attempting to do kapalabhati (yogic breathing exercise) each time I saw her at wedding functions.
No mercy — that’s been my mantra in dealing with folks who find it hard to respect another’s privacy and life choices. By and large, my strategy has been effective. Within months of being back in India, the nosy neighbours, relatives and friends have been appropriately dealt with and forced back into retirement.
But honestly, I shouldn’t have to. With more and more women being educated, forging ahead in their careers, and delaying or sometimes altogether forgoing marriage, it’s time for the rest of India to grow up. This outdated cultural sanction for patronising women by questioning their marital choices must go. Till then, my sisters-in-arms, don’t ever feel guilty for fighting back. Defend your life choices with humour, wit and confidence.

The greying of India

The greying of India

The human population is greying, and with it concerns about the aged have been growing. Even as birth rates fall steeply, improved healthcare systems have contributed to unprecedented longevity levels. The challenges of taking care of the elderly now increasingly face developing nations.
In India, the proportion of the elderly has risen from 5.63 per cent in 1961 to 8.3 per cent in 2012. Figures cannot be generalised across States. The proportionate number of the elderly in Kerala is 13 per cent and 10.8 per cent in Tamil Nadu, against 4 per cent in less progressive States.
In a developing nation like India, with the majority of its population aged 30 or less, the focus of national policy is perforce directed to the basic developmental needs and welfare of children, adolescents and young adults. The problems and issues of its greying population occupy the back-seat.
Vulnerabilities
The elderly constitute a vulnerable section. Frailty and fatigue create physical limitations and social withdrawal. Common locomotor, visual, hearing and psychomotor deficits may compound problems. Depression may set in. Many expect greater attention from children. However, with drastic changes family dynamics brought about by modernisation, the younger family member is unable to provide day-to-day support and care to them. For the young, holding a job effectively and moving up, involves competitive work demands, extra hours and a stressful lifestyle. This in turn tells on peace and harmony at home. Many older people find living with adult children to be more difficult than living alone. There are others who do not have a choice. Under these circumstances, we must face the inevitability of the nuclear family system gaining ground and the elderly moving into old age homes.
The general unpreparedness to face this situation compounds the task. India needs a comprehensive, replicable, sustainable and need-based elder care model.
The developed world has evolved many models for elder care — sheltered homes, home care, and hospital admission for acute health problems, continuing the recovery/rehabilitation phase in hospitals, followed by home care with specialised nursing if required. By following this protocol, elder care is effectively managed in their own home surroundings, and institutional care, which is tedious and expensive, is deferred.
In most western countries, advanced stages of development preceded population ageing, but the same is not true for many developing and middle-income countries, including India. India is going through a demographic paradox where it has to capitalise on the window of opportunity by investing on youth and at the same time focus on an increasing elderly population.
Governments in India have made efforts to tackle the problem of elders’ economic insecurity by launching schemes such as the National Policy on Older Persons, the National Old Age Pension Programme and the Annapurna Programme. Keeping in view the recommendations made in the National Policy on Older Persons, as well as the state’s obligation under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has formulated a National Programme for the Health Care of Elderly. NPHCE envisages dedicated healthcare facilities at all levels of the health delivery system with provision for long-term and short-term training of health professionals to address problems of the elderly. In the first phase, NPHCE is proposed to be implemented in 21 States with eight medical institutions. It will take time to build up before the impact of this ambitious project of elder care reaches us.
Geriatric health care services with qualified professionals are sparse in India and are mostly city-based. Currently, elder care is part of the general health care system which is poorly sensitised to the health needs of elderly. The undergraduate medical curriculum does not cover all aspects of geriatric care. And, post-graduate geriatric care courses are deficient. The only teaching institution in India to introduce a geriatric unit was Madras Medical College, as early as in 1978. It now offers a post-graduate degree in Geriatric Medicine.
Homes for elders
The last decade has witnessed the mushrooming of old-age homes to meet the demand, to suit every purse.
What would be the ideal senior-citizen home offer? Comfortable living accommodation meeting basic amenities, enough open spaces with tree-lined paths and a garden, common recreation and dining rooms for senior citizens to meet, a balanced diet, activities with inmate-community participation — from cutting vegetables to gardening to fondling pet dogs, prayer meetings, library and some intellectual activity, space to meet relatives who visit and spend time with them, a medical dispensary with the doctor, a nurse on full-time duty, and perhaps a shop-cum-restaurant.
How do the elderly view these institutionalised settings? Do they feel depressed and sad? Do they compromise with the situation or are they happy and free to live life with their peer group?
The concept of old-age homes is one that is still viewed with misgivings in Indian society. Unlike the current generation of elderly who form a transitional one, the inevitability of the old age home phenomenon will possibly result in a change of mindset in the elderly, with a move towards a natural shift of acceptance from “what cannot be cured, must be endured” to reach the next level of being enjoyed in the twilight years as a liberated state.

India needs a comprehensive, replicable, sustainable and need-based elder care model, and it must be approached from different angles.
